Objectifying a Queer Body
Thinking Through Materiality
The (Pink) Hair, The Finger(s), and A Condom
2024

Objectifying a Queer Body Thinking Through Materiality is a research project that originates from my personal experience as a queer body and which expands into thinking about queerness in contemporary western society. I have opened up a dialogue with molds, materials and processes to think metaphorically about the intrinsic relation between bodies and objects.

What if I understand objects as bodies, and bodies as objects? Would I find the same values we use to (re)produce objects in contemporary society as we do to (re)produce bodies? Could molds then be understood as the gender norms—the status quo—through which we (re)produce fixed body-objects and identities?Molds are often perceived as static; they don’t allow change, as they are meant to replicate the same shape over and over. I take on molds less as tools but as subjects themselves and collaborators with whom to speculate and reflect with.
The project unfolds through three distinct explorations—The Hair, The Finger(s), and A Condom—each using material and form to reflect on how identity is shaped, contained, or undone. By putting molds into conversation with queerness, the work examines the tensions between bodies and the structures that seek to fix them.

You can read more about the project in the research text here.

	Becoming Oneself

2022
The project takes on drag transformation as a center point to explore the concept of metamorphosis. A constant state of becoming were objects, tools, make-up, and clothes take agency over the body and catalyze its transfiguration. The video addressess the existing parallel between the physical changes and the emotional journey that one goes through in the process; shorter and faster body changes that feed into a slower and prolonged internal growth, and vice versa. The process is dissected into three stages: (to) UN-MAKE, (to) MAKE-UP and (to) RE-MAKE (oneself), that correspond to the preparation, the transformation in itself, and the re-birth into a new “old self”, ready to start all over again.

Confluencia is the result of my time during Taller en Identidad, a design residency directed by Francisco Jaramillo (Fango) in Medellín, Colombia. Three pieces where different materials, techniques, people and craft traditions converge to showcase a multiplicity of identities. The project takes off from an interest of mine to learn about Colombian ancestral ceramic tradition La Chamba to then mix them with traditional basketry techniques from Tolima and Vichada regions –which I translated to leather– and wood carving. The monochromatic pieces celebrate the identity of the Chamba clay process in its three stages: the yellow one in its raw state, the red one with its slip-coat preparation state, and the black in its iconic fired state.

		<description>Abrazando el miedo
2021
‘Abrazando el miedo’ is a piece about acknowledging fear as a protection mechanism. It gathers shaven beard hair I collected for over two years to use as an offer to conjure it. This primal instinct that often clenches our hands and body, and paralyzes us, has the same power to push us, to make us react, and help us thrive. The piece invites us to navigate through fear instead of to avoid it. To listen to it, to understand it, to tune in with it and to work with it. It makes a connection to our heart by forcing us to open our left hand and reach out to it.

	¡CENSOR ME NOT!
2019

The project addresses gender inequality issues at a global-scale by sectioning the nipples out of the body. In them, we see different types of cultural devices that violently determine the way bodies are allowed to transit, or not, in the world. The necklace, denounces the constant censorship that female bodies receive on social media in contrast to male bodies’ freedoms. The brooch, celebrates feminist movements’ resistance in questioning the way moral values seek to control, and barely tolerate, the beauty of a naked nursing breast. And finally, the nipple piercing-tassels, showcase a sarcastic response to these censorship issues by appropriating male nipple privileges as an adaptability mechanism to achieve a –partial– female torso nudity.&#38;nbsp;
